Bar

1. A counter at which drinks, especially alcoholic drinks, and sometimes food, are served. They often go to bars to drink after work.
2. An establishment or room having such a counter. The bar in the hotel was crowded.
3. A solid oblong block of a substance, such a soap or candy. We keep a bar of soap in our bathroom.
4. A ridge, as of sand or gravel, on a shore or streambed, that is formed by the action of tides or currents. Boats must be careful to avoid the gravel bar at the entrance of the harbor.
5. Law. The nullification, defeat, or prevention of a claim or action. We were barred from entering the building.
