1. A rapid, persistent chemical change that releases heat and light and is accompanied by flame, especially the exothermic oxidation of a combustible substance. When camping we always built a fire.
2. Burning fuel or other material: The forest fire burned 3000 acres of forests.
3. The discharge of firearms or artillery. We heard the fire of the cannons.
4. Intense, repeated attack or criticism. She was under fire for her controversial decision.
