1. A removable or hinged cover for a hollow receptacle, bowl, pan, or box. Use a lid on the pot when simmering the soup.
2. A curb, restraint, or limit. They approved a new lid on corporate spending.
3. An act of concealment; a cover. We were told to keep a lid on the report until the election was over.
