Mark

1. An indicator or sign used for reference or measurement. Fill the bottle up to the 16 ounce mark.
2. The target or intender victim of a swindle, a fixed game or con game. He would be a good mark for our swindle.
3. A sign, such as a cross or X, made in lieu of a signature. He signed the document with his mark, an X.
4. To indicate in some way for later reference. I fold over the corner of the page to mark where I finished.
5. To take note of. Please mark my words and obey.
6. To indicate the correctness of and give score to an essay, exam papers, etc. The teacher had graded all papers and marked the score.
7. (golf) To put a coin in the place of one's ball. He marked his ball and picked it up.
8. To blemish, scratch, or stain. The cut left a mark on her face.
9. A written or printed symbol used for punctuation. Any sentence that wants to indicate strong feelings might well end with a exclamation mark.
10. A distinctive trait. Good manners are the mark of a gentleman.
