Pit

1. A hole in the ground. They dug a pit to bury the dead animal.
2. An area at a motor racetrack used for refueling and repairing the vehicle during a race. The pit crew changed all four tires.
3. (in the plural, with the) Something particularly unpleasant. His circus job was the pits, but at least he was paid.
4. The bottom part. The pain was in the pit of his stomach.
5. A small indentation in a surface. The blowing sand put pits in the windshield.
6. The section directly in front of and below the stage of a theater, in which the musicians sit. Typically, pit orchestras play in a lowered area in front of the stage.
7. The single, central kernel or stone of certain fruits, such as a peach or cherry. Remove the pit before canning peaches.
