Rod

1. A thin straight piece or bar of material, such as metal or wood, often having a particular function or use. A fishing rod and reel will help you catch fish.
2. A piston rod. An automobile engine must have lubrication to each of the rods and pistons.
3. An often expandable horizontal bar, especially of metal, used to suspend household items such as curtains or towels. We bought shower rods to use in our bathrooms.
4. A stick used to give punishment by whipping. You should not use a rod to punish children.
