Prune

1. The partially dried fruit of any of several varieties of the common plum. I eat a small bowl of prunes at breakfast.
2. An ill-tempered, stupid, or incompetent person. Our landlady was a nasty old prune.
3. To cut off or remove dead or living parts or branches. To have grapes you must prune the vines.
4. To remove what is superfluous or undesirable. The boss pruned the workforce by 10 percent.
