1. Any of several fast-growing deciduous trees of the genus Populus having unisexual flowers borne in catkins. Poplars are often the first trees to populate new areas.
2. The wood of these trees. Poplar is also sold as inexpensive hardwood timber, used for pallettes and cheap plywood; more specialized uses include matches and the boxes in which camembert cheese is sold.
