8. Demonstrative and Indefinite Pronouns as Adjectives


Demonstrative pronouns are also used as adjectives. Demonstrative pronouns that function as adjectives are often called demonstrative adjectives because they have not lost their pointing out function. In the following sentences the demonstrative pronouns are used as adjectives.

This camera belongs to Janet. (modifies camera)
Those pears are ripe. (modifies pears)
That lady is a pilot. (modifies lady)
These pictures are not for sale. (modifies pictures)

Indefinite pronouns are also used as adjectives. The following examples illustrate their use as adjectives:

Each boy carried a flag. (modifies boy)
Both men received a prize. (modifies men)
Neither answer is correct. (modifies answer)
Many sailors worked on the ship. (modifies sailors)
Any artist would like the job. (modifies artist)
Several chairs needed painting. (modifies chairs)
