Type of Misnomer: An incorrect association of an item's origin India Ink - India Ink is traditionally a carbon black ink mixed with gum and resin, molded into sticks. The name 'India Ink' is thought to be a misnomer which originated in Europe when this ink, actually from China, was imported via the Indies. Panama Hat - Panama hats originated in Ecuador. They were shipped first to Panama before being shipped to their destination in Asia, the rest of the Americas, and Europe. Many imitations exist, including those made in Hong Kong. Norway Rat - Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) are originally native to northern China. Following a series of introductions, the species had found its way to Eastern Europe by the early eighteenth century. By the year 1800, they occurred in every European country. Records show the first sighting of R. norvegicus in the New World occur in the 1770's as ship stowaways. Today, Norway rats (also known as brown rats) can be found on every continent of the world except Antarctica. Guinea Pigs - Guinea pigs live in the wild in South America, living in rocky areas, grasslands and forest edges. They live in groups of about 10 adults, and live in burrows, either dug by themselves or by other animals. They are most active at night, when they come out and forage on a wide variety of plant materials. Danish Pastries - Danish pastries did not originate in Denmark but in Austria. Inspired by Turkish baklava, Danish Pastries derived their name from the Danish cook L. C. Klitteng, who popularized them in western Europe and the United States. English Horns - Descended from the natural horn, the instrument is often informally known as the French horn. However, this is technically incorrect since the instrument is not French in origin, but German. Therefore, the International Horn Society has recommended since 1971 that the instrument be simply called the horn. French horn is still the most commonly used name for the instrument in the United States. |
