Temple of Heaven The Corner Towers There is a Watch Tower at each of the four corners of the walled compound of the Imperial Palace. These towers were built in 1420 (18th year of Ming Emperor Yung Lo's reign). Nine beams and 18 pillars support the roof. Each has three tiers of eaves with 72 ridges. There is a glazed beast at each of the four corners of the roof, which is topped by a gilded bottle-shaped knob. These towers are exquisitely structured, and their beauty is further enhanced by being mirrored in the moat surrounding the Palace.
