16. Preparing Rice Fields with Water Buffalos

The rice has been harvested (by hand) and it is time for the next crop. Mid-February marks the start of spring rice planting in parts of the south. These Chinese farmers are plowing the rice fields with a water buffalos. Water buffalos are only used in the wet areas, as they need lots of water. In the dry areas they are not used. Only Asians have the patience to use water buffalos. China will have problems when they join the WTO (World Trade Organization) because they cannot grow rice below the world market price.
