2. Bernice on the Train to Hefei

The adventure to Hefei has begun. Here Bernice rests on her bunk on the train. Lucy had obtained three hard bed tickets on the train. The trip started at about 9:00 PM and we will arrive there at about 8:30 AM the next morning. Bernice has a lower bunk and I have the lower bunk opposite hers. Sam has a middle bunk above mine. This 10-hour trip on hard beds costs about 100 Yuan or $12 US each. Hard beds lie perpendicular to the tracks, three high in a group of six. A table, shown, lies between the sets of bunks. They furnish the bed with a blanket, pillow and pillow cover. Shortly after the train begins, they extinguish the lights and you can sleep. A pair of sinks is at the end of the car along with a toilet. The toilet is a squat affair with the tracks whizzing below you. Don't stand near a train as it passes by. We did get a good night's sleep.
