1. We Arrive in Town - Boss Yang Takes us on a Trip

In 1984 Bernice and I worked for the Chinese National Academy of Sciences Language Institute in Chengdu. Our boss, Boss Yang organized a trip for us to go to the southwest of China, an area known as Xishuangbanna Dai Nationality Autonomous Region. This region comprises of some 20,000 square kilometers of remote valleys between low, rounded mountains covered with dense jungle. Paul had given each student an English name and to Mr. Yang he gave the name of Boss. Now everyone knows him as Boss Yang. He is standing on the left. At times he was most generous.
