1988 Trip to City of Zigong, Sichuan
16. Bernice at Zigong We have arrived in Zigong and are walking about the city. Zigong is 200 km southeast of Chengdu. Zigong is known for two things. Salt was mined here as early as the second century. Natural gas, a byproduct of salt mining -- was used to separate the salt from the brine. By 1600 brine was extracted from over more than 1km below the surface. There are some marvelous exhibits of how salt was extracted. The second thing in Zigong is the dinosaur museum. Hundreds of dinosaurs are to be seen in the museum. Natural gas is in great abundance in this part of Sichuan and the buses all run on natural gas. Behind Bernice is the typical stone lion found in front of many hotels, restaurants, and businesses. The day is one of those typical Sichuan gray overcast days. ⇦ Back to Page 15 On to Page 17 ⇨Hi-Res Pic (96K) Return to Zigong Scenes - Page 3 |
