Are Things Getting Better in China? - 1949 to 1985 - Page 10
A College Paper by Paul Noll (1990) I. Nutritional Intake per Day Nutrition has also improved for the Chinese people. Food consumption showed a marked improvement as food became more available and incomes rose. Again note that the countryside still lags behind the urban population. This reflects the disparity of incomes shown on Page 9. Remember that in the years between 1959 and 1962 (The Great Leap Forward years), 10,000,000 people died of "unnatural causes (starvation)." The Communist Party had attempted to return the countryside to normalcy after the disruption of the Great Leap forward but bad weather hampered this effort. |
