Chinese gardens were, and are, very symbolic though. As well as the landscape, recreated through elements of hill and pond, and rock and water, in the garden, Chinese gardens use elements of balance and harmony through 'feng shui.' Feng shui actually means 'wind' and 'water' - and looks at how these vital 'forces' or 'energies' run through a garden. The rocks in a Chinese garden represent 'Yang' - mountains, and the masculine. The water in the garden represents 'Yin' - the female.
