When you leave the big city you will encounter much more non-motorized vehicles. China does, however, place a great deal of effort on tree-lined roads. Literally tens of millions of trees have been planted along the side of road and freeways. China is to be applauded of this effort. In addition they have put much effort to add English signage to their road system
