The Human Back

Transportation in China in 1988

Human Back - 22

When it comes to transportation in China you must not forget the human back. You will see many rural people in the countryside with loads on their back. And it is certainly a uni-sex means of transportation and with all ages from the very young to the very old. It is another illustration of the hard-working Chinese people making their nation stronger by everyone working hard. This lady is taking home a load of shavings to use in a fire for cooking. Coolie is a Chinese word. It is pronounced Ku Li with a rising tone on the Li. It means bitter labor. We stole the word from them.
