Banpo Neolithic Village Xi'an - 2008 44. Model of the Banpo Village The Banpo Village remains are located between the Chanhe and the Bahe rivers, to the east of Xi'an city. The remains were discovered in 1953 by workers laying the foundations for a factory, and are the most complete example of an agricultural Neolithic settlement in the world. It is estimated that the village covered an area of 50,000 square meters. 5 excavations between 1953 and 1957 have unearthed about a fifth of the total village (about 10,000 square meters). In 1958 the Banpo Museum was opened. We visited the village in 1984 and again in 2008. ⇦ Back to Page 43 On to Page 45 ⇨Hi-Res Pic (248K) Return to Banpo Village - Page 6 |
