Probably the most famous and most thoroughly excavated site of the Yang-shao culture is near Banpo, in Shanxi Province. Banpo is one of the smaller Yang-shao sites, built within and oval ditch enclosing about eleven acres. The site lies on a loess terrace nine meters above the river's level, and dates to the 5,000s BCE.
