Duke University is a private research university located in Durham, North Carolina, United States. Founded by Methodists and Quakers in the present day town of Trinity in 1838, the school moved to Durham in 1892. In 1924, tobacco and electric power industrialist James B. Duke established The Duke Endowment, at which time the institution changed its name to honor his deceased father, Washington Duke.

Duke's student body consists of 6,484 undergraduates and 8,107 graduate and professional students. The university has "historic and symbolic ties to the Methodist Church but it always has been independent in its governance."

Duke's teams have won 13 NCAA team national championships - the women's golf team has won five, the men's basketball team has won four, the men's lacrosse team has won two, and the men's soccer and women's tennis teams have won one each.
