The Mughal Empire was the dominant power in the Indian subcontinent between the mid-16th century and the early 18th century. Its power collapsed after suffering heavy losses being defeated by the smaller army of the Maratha Empire in the War of 27 years. Founded in 1526, it officially survived until 1858, when it was supplanted by the British Raj.

Its population at that time has been estimated as between 110 and 150 million, over a territory of more than 3.2 million square kilometres (1.2 million square miles).

A major Mughal contribution to the Indian subcontinent was their unique architecture.
