Fuchsia is a vivid shade of red, purplish-red or pink named after the flower of the fuchsia plant, itself named after the German scientist Leonhart Fuchs. The color fuchsia was first introduced as the color of a new aniline dye called fuchsine, patented in 1859 by the French chemist Francois-Emmanuel Verguin. Its name was changed the same year to magenta, after an historic battle near the Italian city of that name. In the RGB color model, used to create colors on computers and television screens, and in web colors, fuchsia and magenta are exactly the same color, made by mixing blue and red light at equal intensity.

Another name for fuchsia is Magenta. Fuchsine was first prepared by August Wilhelm von Hofmann from aniline and carbon tetrachloride in 1858. The 'crystals', pictured at the right are of basic fuchsine, also known as basic violet 14, basic red 9, pararosanaline or CI 42500. They are soft, with a hardness of less than 1, about the same as or less than talc. They possess a strong metallic luster and a green yellow color. They leave dark greenish streaks on paper and when these are moistened with a solvent, the strong magenta color appears.
