581st Signal Radio Relay Co. at Hungnam (1950)
5. The Port of Hungnam Eventually our turn came to leave and we were assembled on the dock. Cranes lifted the vehicles on the freighters and we waited on the dock for hours in the deep snow. There were many hundreds of soldiers waiting on the dock to load on ships. I was so tired I crawled into my sleeping bag and went to sleep right there in the midst of everybody. I was suddenly aware of a bright light and a terrible noise. I poked my head out of the bag to discover I was the only one on the dock and the ship was trying to wake me to climb on board. They lowered a crane for my duffle bag and I climbed up the rope ladders and boarded the ship. The ship then immediately got under way. ⇦ Back to Scene 4 On to Scene 6 ⇨Return to Hungnam - Page 1 |
