The 581st Sig RR Goes to Korea Aboard the USS Weigel 581st Signal Co.at Inchon (1950)
2. The 581st Goes to Korea on the USS Weigel

While Noll was on the Robin Trent the rest of the company was on the USS Weigel, that is the ones that did not drive trucks. None of us knew about Inchon and McArthur's bold plan. We didn't know what a gamble it was. We didn't know about the tides, some 30-40 foot difference between low and high tide. We were issued some ammo, I remember getting 30 rounds per man just at the end. They didn't want us to shoot each other. I remember marveling at the vast armada that was assembled. I remember that the tide going and coming made it look like the ship was under way. The tide advances over the sand, which is very shallow, faster than a man could run.

At low tide the water is many miles from the shoreline. I remember a lone enemy prop plane attacking the fleet. It was shot down very quickly and sat in the mud for as long as we were there. The pilot was brave to attack such a fleet in a single plane. I remember the big ships blasting the shore. It was exciting and scary day for a young lad.
