581st Radio Relay Co. in North Korea (1950)
11. Jade Relay 2 is Operational After the third hill we tried we finally succeeded. We are now in operation and communications are working. A radio relay station operates like this. We have a transmitter and a receiver facing Jade Radio Relay 1 to the south and a transmitter and a receiver facing Jade 3 to the west. In that way we have continuous two-way communications. At the ends there are carrier units that are hooked to land lines to various units switchboards. The carrier then splits the voice communications into one of four frequencies so there can be four simultaneous two-way conversations at any one time. In addition, channel three can then be optionally split into four teletype channels, which it generally was. In the middle we can hear all seven channels but except for channel one the others are like squeaky mice. The teletype sounds similar to Morse code. This station is right on the coast. If you look at a map we are transmitting across water. For some reason I don't know why, FM signals tend to bend while crossing water. Thus we were able to transmit far beyond our normal range. It took many days to establish communications but what a relief when we did. Hi-Res Pic (115K) ⇦ Back to Scene 10 Return to Page 2 On to Scene 12 ⇨ |
