581st Radio Relay Co. in North Korea (1950)
16. View of Jade 2 from the Town of Sinchon This is a view of the Relay station from the town of Sinchon. As you can see the hill is not very high but because it is right on the coast we have a straight shot across the water to Wonson so it doesn't have to be that high. One thing that helps us in the location of our stations are accurate relief maps cast in plastic that have all the mountains accurately raised so you can use a ruler to see if there is a strait shot between stations. The town people are extremely friendly to us and treat us like liberators not invaders. There is a barbershop in town. I went there one day to get a haircut. Because I could read/write and speak Korean fairly well I knew the man before me paid 20 Won (20 Korean Dollars) for his haircut and shave. The barber charged me 40 Won. Hi-Res Pic (132K) I thought that was unfair and we discussed the overcharge in Korean. He reduced it to 30 Won. Now at 6000 to a US dollar that is ridiculous. He wanted to charge me 2/3 of a cent for a haircut and shave and I spent 10 minutes getting him to reduce it to 1/2 cent, a reduction of 1/6 of a cent. I still chuckle when I think about it. By the way the smallest bill I had was 1000 won (16 cents). He had to go to the bank to get change. Today, I still have 800 North Korean won that I never could spend. ⇦ Back to Scene 15 Return to Page 2 On to Scene 17 ⇨ |
