Paul Noll Gets New Uniforms 581st Signal Co. South Korea (1951)
9. Noll Gets New Uniforms

Here we are operating a new relay station. It was the only one where we didn't have to climb a mountain. It was on flat land. And a marvelous thing happened. The California 40th Army National Guard unit was assigned to take over our station. They were new to the business and came to be trained by us. After training for a few days they took over the station and we left. What we did was to give them our old used equipment, radios, power units, and antennas, and took their brand new equipment in exchange. It was nice to have new equipment. Also I discovered a new thing. While driving one day for food pickup I discovered a "Quartermaster Shower Unit." I stopped to check it out. You gave them all your clothes except your hat and boots, took a hot shower and then they gave you new clothes. They then washed your stuff and mended if needed and then recycled it back. But they had just started and had no old clothes. That day I picked up my whole team and we made three trips and our old clothes that had been washed by Koreans in a stream beating them with a stick and were pretty ragged were all exchanged for brand new outfits, plus some hot showers.

In the picture you can see the power units that power our radios. They are single cylinder 2500-watt units that provide 120 volts AC power. The cable goes to a switching unit so you can seamlessly transfer power to a new unit and then shut off the old unit.     Hi-Res Pic (89K)
