Station Transmitters and Receivers 581st Signal RR Co. on Hill 1157 in Korea, 1951
14. Station Transmitters and Receivers

Here is a picture inside of the radio shack. Both the transmitters and receivers are crystal controlled. That means the receiver can only receive one frequency and is very stable as is the transmitter. Both are FM. Because we operate in the 100 megacycle (now Hertz) range and crystals would not work in that range the crystal frequency is multiplied by doublers and tripplers some 96 times. This creates thousands of harmonics. And with 8 transmitters and 8 receivers harmonic interference is a serious problem. When there is a problem you have to change frequencies. That means you retune the receiver or transmitter, take down the antenna and retune it. Also the distant station must do the same.

Then the new frequency may cause him problems and the fun begins again. The radios put out enough heat to warm up the shack during the winter and made it unbearable in the summer. There is constant noise coming from the 8 receivers at most times of the day and night. But you get a good sense of the war progress or failures. The situation at the Chosin Reservoir with the Marines at the end of 1950 was very distressing to listen to.
