581st Signal on Hill 775 - South Korea (1951)
13. Some Friends at a Church near Hill 775 These Koreans lived near the Church I would visit on my off duty times. They were most kind to me and we enjoyed a visit away from the everyday cares of work. Most often they would invite me to their homes and at times for lunch or dinner. We would talk and they had many questions about Americans and the United States. They had for the most part been left out of the war that affected most of the people because they lived up in the hills and had nothing of value or military use. The young people and I got along well. We would laugh and play. I tried to always bring army chocolate bars for the kids. Hi-Res Pic (132K) But they gave me more than I could ever gave them. They shared their lives with me. I was always careful to get back to the station before it got dark. I always took my rifle with me but never had to use it except one time when I shot a couple of dozen sparrows for their dinner. I was a crack shot and would just graze the birds so they could cook them and eat them. Food was still scarce in those days. ⇦ Back to Scene 12 Return to Page 2 On to Scene 14 ⇨ |
