Road up to Hill 775 Relay Station 581st Signal RR Co. on Hill 775 - South Korea (1951)
4. Top of Road to Hill 775 Relay Station

This is the road up to Hill 775. The military in Korea names hills with numbers. The number is the number of meters of the hill height. Hill 775 is about 2900 feet. This station is near the junction of the Han and North Han rivers. You would never want to take a car up this road and it wouldn't pass safety inspections but it was a big improvement over walking up the hill. I think the road exists solely because the GIs just started driving up the ridge. It scared me every time I drove up. We were at this location for a few months. Other than having a million flies, beetles and being ghastly hot it was a good spot.

Seoul was not too far away. On one trip I spotted a 500-gallon water tank trailer parked by the side of the road. On inspection I discovered that the springs were broken and it belonged to the Marines. I repaired the spring with some wire so it could be towed and took it home. We then painted out the unit designation on the bumper and painted our unit designation. The army has an unusual paint. It comes as a powder and you mix it with gasoline. After the painting it now belongs to us. It beats having to carry water daily in 6 five-gallon cans. But alas, the company headquarters found out about it and requested (ordered) we give it to them.
