Paul Noll Joins the US Army
3. My Platoon of Battery B, 29th Field Artillery Battalion, 4th Infantry Division Daily, after breakfast, roll call is in front of the barracks and then we marched in formation for the training events of the day. Calisthenics is every day to get you into shape. Most of the young fellows had no problem. They went slow at first and the treatment was fair and evenhanded. I remember once as punishment our Sergeant decided to march us in the sand for several hours. A Lieutenant came by and severely reprimanded the Sergeant for two reasons that impressed me to this day. One is that marching is not a punishment; it is something armies must learn to do. Second was that he was sitting down while we marched. In that way he could not know when we were excessively tired and could be injured. That would be considered "Damage to Government Property."
