Tacoma Relay - 1969-70
62. Road up Tacoma Site
Like at other isolated sites we had to drive a daily "ration run". All site support came from Kunsan Air Base (K-8) about 25 miles southwest of Tacoma Site 10. From the main road that went to Kunsan it was about 1/2 mi up to the site gate. It took about an hour to drive to the air base and we traveled it rain, snow, mud or heat. The water hauling was handled through a contract so we normally did not have to haul water for the site unless there was a problem. Then we used a 500 gal water tank on wheels that we got from the Air Force to haul our water to site. The site's support came from the air base and included food rations, fresh baked bread, movies, mail, and various supplies. Every month we had to pick up a new book of Secret Codes that we used each day to "Authenticate" ourselves and site. The codes were kept in a safe and only the Site Chief and the Assistant Site Chief had the combination to it. Some of the new Air Force Police at the air base were not familiar with Army personnel or vehicle identification markings so at times we would be questioned about the letters on our vehicle bumpers. The marking was SCCK and they thought that it was a joke but not funny so we had to explain to them we were in STRATCOM. They were used to seeing EUSA, 8th US Army and 38th Brigade Artillery but not SCCK (Strategic Communications Command Korea). ⇦ Back to Page 61 Return to Page 8 On to Page 63 ⇨ |
