Richmond Relay Station Richmond Relay - 1969-70 75. Helicopter Pad

Another driving experience I recall from my days on Richmond Site is the dangerous winter season driving. While driving on the ice even with tire chains the conditions were so slippery that the truck would slide on the steep slope even in low gear. We knew not to use the brakes as that would start the vehicle to slide so we used the engines back compression as our only speed and braking system.

Even though we employed these driving techniques and installed tire chains on all 10 tires we would still get into trouble at times pushing our luck on the risky road. We had an old saying that went something like "when the back of the truck passes the cab its time to go!" Once a large truck starts to rotate in that manner and there is nothing but cliffs on both sides of you it time to bail out!   Hi-Res Pic (119K)
