Company G, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines
33. Marine Positions on the Ready After the battle of 4-5 November at Hills 987 and 891 How Company withdrew after taking 8 casualties and their ammunition became scarce. In the morning of the seventh the Chinese had vanished. The mysterious disappearance of the unit, followed by the equally strange withdrawal of all the Chinese forces aroused no end of speculation. The conclusion the Marine Corps board arrived at later concluded, "the 124th CCF Division was estimated to have been rendered militarily non-effective." The third Battalion encountered no opposition whatever as it then occupied the southern tips of Hills 891 and 987. 3/7 devoted the rest of the day of 7 November consolidating positions along the road and sending out patrols in a vain search for the vanished 124th CCF Division. Weapons shown in the picture are a M2 Carbine and an air-cooled 50 Machine Gun. ⇦ Back to Page 32 On to Page 34 ⇨Return to Sgt Smith - Page 5 |
