Epic of Fox Hill -- Page 6

By PFC Donald L. Childs, 1st Squad, 2nd Platoon, F/2/7 US Marines

U.S. Weapons One or two at a time, men would go out in front of the lines to pick up weapons and ammo from the enemy dead. It was discovered that many of the automatic weapons we were facing were not "burp-guns" but the latest American made Thompson submachine guns of 45 cal. Company wide we recovered about twenty-five the first night with only one unserviceable.

Their basic rifle was the 1898 Mauser design in 7.92mm, manufactured by the Chinese. Many of these rifles were new and showed exceptional workmanship and finish. A very effective weapon at long range in trained hands. Jackson and I had five each of these rifles loaded and lined up in back of our hole as backup and for returning fire saving the 30's for more pressing moments.
