After three years of persecution under communists, citizens of Hagaru-ri beside Chosin Reservoir hold their first religious service in temporary church. Speaking through an interpreter is Lieutenant Commander John H. Craven, Navy Chaplain attached to 7th Marine Regiment, restores the church bell to Korean Pastor. The congregation fearfully arrived, wrapped in layers of cheesecloth-like material and odd garments in bitter weather. Communists had taken church bell. Military and civilian committee began work to rebuild church founded in 1910 by Canadian missionaries.

Recently, I learned that those who succeeded in fleeing North Korea built a Church in Seoul, Korea. Chaplain Craven, who passed through Hagaru as a member of the 7th Regiment prior to our arrival, presented them the original Hagaru church bell. which he had carried.
