G-3 of the 1st Marine Division at the Chosin Reservoir
Then Colonel Bowser is credited with being the architect of the fight out of
the Mountains. These remarks is excerpted from his address to the reunion of
"The Few" at Arlington, Virginia.
Since the reason for this gathering is to observe the coming together of those who served at the Reservoir, it's appropriate that we take a look at the action, not in detail, but some of the broader aspects of the campaign. All services were involved -- Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine pilots landed on airfields made of ice that no self-respecting pilot would look at in normal circumstances. Those fields were frequently under enemy fire while our engineers worked on them. At the division level, we knew that we were in trouble the moment the 7th Marines reported that they were in contact with and fighting Chinese soldiers, not North Koreans. From the moment in the vicinity of Sudong, the war took on an entirely new aspect. ⇦ Back to Page 6 On to Page 2 ⇨ Return to Chosin Stories |
