Andy Meisels Joins the Air Force for the Day - Segmant 6

Where there is a Will there's a Way

Carl is a native of Philadelphia, and any time he came in contact with a member of the armed forces, his first question to him was: "are you from Philly?" In the summer of 1951 we were stationed in Young Dong Po, a suburb of Seoul, and decided to explore the capital city. At this time the 5h (I believe) US Air Force was headquartered in Seoul. As is well known, the US Air Force flies in their own supplies no matter where they may be situated. And as such, their service clubs are better equipped with luxuries than the Army, at least that is the way it was then. Of course entrance to these clubs was open only to members of the Air Force. Peeking through the fence, Carl noted how some fly boys were walking around causally with drinks in their hands and having a good time. How could one sneak in and have a few drinks on the cheap? Walking back to the main gate, Carl approached the AP guarding the entrance. By coincidence the guard was from Philly. No problem. Carl got in, and met me at a prearranged spot carrying two drinks, one for each of us. I pulled out my pant legs from my boots and my shirt from my fatigue trousers in order to look like a fly boy, then climbed the fence, and with drink in hand, I mingled with the crowd.
