Chukar

Alectoris chukar - An Old-World species, introduced in North Amerrica as a game bird. Recognize the fellow seems a little out of his normal range. He showed up for the first time at our home in July 2005. Seems quite tame and unafraid of us. Hangs around our house. Seems to run a long ways before flight. We suspect he escaped from a local game bird farm.
This large European partridge prefers open, rocky, barren lands. Sexes are similar. Note cream-colored face with prominent black border. In flight (strong and direct), the reddish legs are visible. Eats grass-shoots, seeds, grain, and insects. The male calls chuk-ar.
