American Coot Fulica Americana - Common. In nesting season found on fresh water and in winter on both fresh and salt. The dark plumage contrasts with the stubby white bill and the white marking underneath the short tail. Feeds on shore, on the surface of the water or under it, diving with an upward jump before submerging. Swims bouyantly, nodding its head and paddling with its lobed toes. Flight is heavy, with tailing legs. Call, short rough croaks and cackles. |
