Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus - Common on the breeding grounds and in flocks at sea; uncommon to rare inland. The slender bill is intermediate in length between those of the other two phalaropes. The legs are dark. Flying birds in winter plumage resemble Sanderlings but are darker-backed and slender-billed and have a black line through the eye. Its call is a low, short, scratchy note; also a single pik. |
