Mountain Quail Oreortyx pictus - This largest of North American quails is common in mountain regions in mixed woodlands and chaparral. The long, thin head plume is distinctive; the vertical white streaks on the flanks and the chestnut throat are good field marks. Sexes are similar, but the female is duller than the male.
