Yellow Rail

Coturnicops noveboracensis - A very small rail, rare and extremely shy. It inhabits fresh and salt marshes, also meadows and even grain fields. The yellowish plumage is interrupted by black striping on the back. The bill is small and yellow. In flight the best field mark is the white wing patch, but this bird can rarely be flushed. The voice, heard mostly at dusk, is clicking notes in alternating groups of 2 and 3, imitated by tapping two pebbles together.
