Least Bittern Ixobrychus exilis - Common but very shy, usually remaining hidden in tall fresh-water grasses and sedges. This smallest heron is a weak flier. It will run or climb rather than take wing; seldom flies more than 100 feet. Both sexes have large wing patches of buff and chestnut that distinguish them from the dark-winged Green Heron.
