Ruffed Grouse Bonasa umbellus - Usually fairly common, but the population is variable. A summer resident of clearings in open woods; winters in conifers. Two color phases occur, gray and red, differing mainly in the tones of the finely barred tail with its black terminal band. The male attracts females by display pattern and by 'drumming' the air with rapidly beating wings, producing an accelerating hollow roll.
