Swainson's Hawk Buteo swainsoni - A dark-breasted western hawk; especially common on the plains. Call is a thin whistle usually slurred downward. These fellows glide noiselessly overhead riding on the thermal updrafts from the ridge behind our place looking for prey. Usually two or three of them are gliding with few wing beats on most days. Sometimes high overhead sometimes low, their shadow passes over us as we work in our yard and fields. |
