Belted Kingfisher

Ceryle alcyon - The most common kingfisher in North America. Seen singly or in pairs along steams and ponds. Except for terns, kingfishers are the only small birds that dive headlong from air into water. Recognized in flight by its deep, irregular wing beats, its big-headed appearance, and its loud rattling call. Often hovers before diving.
