Mergus merganser - A large, common, fresh-water species, seldom found in salt water. Longer and slimmer than goldeneyes and the male is whiter behind. The male's green head, which seldom appears crested, often looks black. The female has more of a crest; the distinctive white throat and sharp contrast between neck and breast distinguish it from the female Red-breasted. Call, low, short quacks.
